Volkswagen's new all-electric range features the upcoming 2021 ID.4 SUV and ID.4 Coupe. Read on to find out what else we know about the ID.4.

With the recently released all-electric ID.3 Hatchback, Volkswagen are keen to get their customers hyped about their upcoming all-electric SUV the ID.4. Here's what we know so far:

  • There will be both an SUV and Coupe versions of the ID.4
  • The range of both versions will be around 200-300 miles
  • There will be single and dual motor options
  • The interior design has been revealed
  • The design of the front and rear LED lights has been revealed
  • The ID.4 is likely to cost around £40,000 to £45,000 depending on spec level
  • The ID.4 will go on sale in 2021

The Volkswagen ID.4 is being released with the new IQ Matrix LED lights, as confirmed by VW themselves in their Newsroom post. These lights house 11 LED units that will switch between full and dipped beam based on the road conditions, to give you the best view of the road without dazzling other drivers.

The ID.4 will come with rear LED brake lights, which have been arranged in a particular figure to give a brilliant 3D-like effect. The colours of the lights have been enhanced by fibre optic cables which display a higher contract red than what we're used to with current cars. This will enhance the safety of the ID.4, especially in the dark of night. As is becoming standard with many premium brand cars, the ID.4 will have a welcome and goodbye animation on both the front and rear lights when you unlock and lock your car.

Taking inspiration from the recently released Volkswagen ID.3, the ID.4 will feature a very similar interior. Featuring a rigid and high quality designed cabin, a large tablet infotainment system that dominates the centre dashboard and a digital drivers display behind the wheel. The VW ID.4 also comes with a panoramic glass roof and adjustable ambient lighting. We know the SUV model will have around 540 litres of luggage within the boot, which is significantly larger than your standard VW Golf.

There are a few concept art/renders floating around of the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV. They show the basic design philosophy that VW are going for. The main feature of all-electric cars is that they don't need intake grilles as there is no engine to cool down via a radiator. This clearly shows in the front end renderings where the standard feature of all combustion engine cars is the large intake grilles. An interesting design feature of the ID.4 is the LED lights that start on either end and extend out to the centre of the VW badge via light strips. The ID.4 gives off a very sporty aesthetic with its splitter and low clearance front bumper

The rear render shows the same stylings as the front. With the 3D LED lights extending to the centre of the VW badge and the sporty-looking rear bumper being the main feature. No exterior exhaust pipe of course as the ID.4 is an all-electric car which helps to give a symmetrical style. The roof rails are a standard addition of most SUVs these days and the ID.4 will come in a few different alloy size options. We think the larger the better, as an SUV benefits from having those larger wheels when it comes to the unpredictable British roads.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Price

Prices are unconfirmed as of writing this article and may be for some time. However, we can use the current all-electric SUV competition to hazard a guess at ID.4 prices. Competition such as the Hyundai Kona, Peugeot e-2008, Kia Soul EV and Kia e-Niro have already given us examples of mid-size all-electric SUVs costs. We already have the ID.3 price as well which is a smaller car. Given this data, we would make an assumption the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 will cost around £40,000 - £45,000 depending on the initial spec level.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Specification

ID.4 range and battery capacity

Volkswagen have already stated that the ID.4 will have a 300-mile range, but this doesn't account for the different battery sizes and single and dual motors. Expect the entry-level models to have around 200 miles range. Entry-level specs will more than likely have a single motor rather than a dual motor, which means the entry-level will lose the AWD (all-wheel-drive) option. Battery capacity is yet to be confirmed, but we believe a 64kWh or 95kWh battery will more than likely power the Volkswagen ID.4.

ID.4 Horsepower and 0-60mph times

Horsepower is unknown at the moment. However, given we already know a great deal about the current mid-size all-electric SUVs on the market, we can assume that the single motor option will have around 200bhp or more. This is because the Kia e-Niro has a single FWD (front-wheel-drive) motor that produces 201bhp with a 64kWh battery. The dual-motor option will increase the horsepower significantly and this could be around 300 to 350bhp. 0-60mph times should be looking around the range of 7 seconds on the single motor to around 5 seconds with the dual motor.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Release Date
