2022 Volkswagen Golf R Estate Now Available To Lease

It took a while. After many teasers, concepts, images and videos, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Estate is now finally available to lease. It's the big brother of the Golf R Hatchback and features many of the same quirks and features, but offers that extra space that makes it a great all-rounder for families and performance enthusiasts alike.

So what has changed compared to the previous generation Golf R Estate?

First things first, the most obvious changes are the design. It features the Mk8 generation of styling which is aggressive, sleek and sharp. In our opinion, the Mk8 design is far more attractive than the previous Mk7.5 design.

It's up on power. Volkswagen says only slightly, as its gained 15 bhp (from 305 to 320). But we think VW is understating the power. As there have been a couple of YouTube videos popping up with standard Mk8 Golf R Hatchbacks on dyno showing around 340 bhp. So it's possible the new 2022 Golf R Estate could be up by 35 bhp.

How does it fare against VW's 316 bhp Arteon Shooting Brake R? Exactly the same, interestingly enough, with both cars offering a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.9 seconds.

It's longer than the previous generation too. With the 2022 Golf R Estate boasts a length of 4,644 mm, an increase of 349mm. That simply means more space for the family dogs and more space for passengers to stretch their legs.

Boot space has increased by 6 litres, from 305 in the previous Mk7.5 to 311 litres in the 2022 model. Maximum legroom for the rear seats has increased by 38mm, from 903mm to 941mm.

Volkswagen has added the R-Performance Torque Vectoring system seen in the Mk8 Golf R Hatchback. This system distributes the engine output to all four wheels. The new differential on the rear axle distributes the drive power not just between the front and rear axles, but also variably between the two rear wheels. Up to 100% of torque can be directed to the wheel on the outside of a bend if necessary.

You also get all-new Vehicle Dynamics Manager and XDS electromechanical differential locks, which allow a higher level of agility and help to reduce understeer. Meaning the driver involvement and dynamic appeal is top-notch this time around.

Just like the Mk8 Golf R Hatchback, the 2022 Golf R Estate features 18" Jerez black diamond-turned alloy wheels as standard, a full R body kit, a roof spoiler and quad exhaust pipes. It comes in Pure White Solid Paint as standard but you can opt for metallic paint as a cost option. You can also upgrade to 19" Adelaide/Estoril alloys for a cost too.

You can make your 2022 Golf R Estate perfect for the winter too with the Winter Pack. This includes heated front and rear seats with a heated steering wheel.

2022 Volkswagen Golf R Estate R-Performance Pack

Just like the Mk8 Golf R Hatchback, you can get the optional R-Performance package for the 2022 Golf R Estate. We've had plenty of people asking what exactly this adds, so we'll detail below when it gives you:

  • Increases top speed from 155 mph to 168 mph
  • Adds 19" 'Estoril' black diamond turned alloys
  • Adds 'Drift' mode
  • Adds 'Special' mode
