2023 BMW M2 Coupe Revealed
BMW are no stranger to controversy with its car designs at the moment. From the polarising new M3 and M4 with their larger-than-life kidney grille. The 2023 BMW XM giving us Angry Birds vibes. And the 2023 M760e having revised styling, BMW is definitely in the limelight at the moment for interesting designs.
Along with the designs, a string of hybrid engines is planned thanks to tightening EU emissions regulations. But not for the 2023 BMW M2 Coupe, as it is keeping the pure driver's focus with its commanding 3.0-litre ICE (internal combustion engine).
So what has changed?
Well, everything more or less. The 2023 BMW M2 gets a retuned engine that offers 453bhp. It's slightly longer and wide, with it being over 11cm longer than the previous M2 model and 16mm wider thanks to its new aggressive wide stance. It's also 11mm lower to give it more stability when driven hard.
The most obvious changes are the exterior design updates. New and wider wheel arches, a widened double-kidney grille, increased air intakes and a huge rear bumper all make to give the 2023 M2 an aggressively musclebound design.
The dual quad exhausts return with a gloss black-looking diffuser that looks seriously fantastic. There is a small spoiler-looking arch that runs across the top of the boot lid and vertical reflectors are integrated into the wide side arches.
At first, we weren't sure what to think but it's actually a very aggressively styled car and the new design is growing on us. For shoes, you get some lightweight 19-inch alloys on the front and 20-inch on the back.
Adaptive LED headlights come as standard which uses funky technology that allows them to pivot as the road undulates and turns to ensure maximum illumination.
In true M Division fashion, weight distribution for the new M2 is 50:50 and it's only available in RWD (rear-wheel drive). This means you'll be able to have plenty of fishtail-happy moments with the full 453bhp sent to the rear wheels.
There is no xDrive (all-wheel drive) option, unfortunately, which is available on the new M3 and M4. But not that it matters. You can get either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The old seven-speed DCT has been retired and the new eight-speed promises quicker shifts and a better fuel economy.
The new M2 offers a brand new 10-mode variable traction-control system, letting you choose what number to pick that corresponds with the level of traction you will receive. If you are feeling risky you can choose mode 1 and commence the oversteer antics.
What about the engine, is it faster than the previous model?
Maybe. The 2023 M2 features the same turbocharged 3.0-litre tried and tested six-cylinder petrol motor. BMW has tuned the engine to pull a few more ponies and it now produces a breathtaking 453bhp.
BMW claim the new M2 will do 0-60mph in just 3.9 seconds in the automatic and 4.1 seconds with the slightly slower manual. This is a similar time to the previous M2 Competition but now we have a bit more horsepower on tap. So we expect it will be faster than the previous model.
Once again (and annoyingly), the car is limited to a top speed of 155mph and can be unlocked with the optional M Driver's package to get a max of 177mph. We wish manufacturers would stop doing this personally.
The chassis has been modified to be stiffer and structural rigidity has been increased to help the car maintain composure across rough roads. Adaptive damper suspension and M Active differential comes as standard.
You get six-piston brake calipers with 15-inch rotors on the front and four-pot 14.6-inch floating rear discs. BMW says the braking system is now electric instead of hydraulic, improving pedal feel and stopping power.
Okay great but what about the interior!?
The interior offers a classy but racy feeling and is refined, as BMW interiors always are. All versions of the 2023 M2 will come with M Sports seats with electric adjustment and heated seats.
You get a large double display that is integrated well to look like a single curved screen stretching across from the centre to the driver's side. In actuality, it's a 12.9-inch instrument panel for the driver's view and a 14.9-inch touchscreen display in the centre.
You also get a high-quality sound system in the form of the now immortalised Harman Kardon system (our favourite for sure). Carbon fibre is dotted everywhere, from the centre gearshift panel area, the front dashboard area and along the roof.
If you want M carbon bucket seats you'll need to opt for the aforementioned M Driver's package. These weigh 10kg less than the standard M Sports seats and provide a better grip when driving hard. The package also adds more interior carbon fibre to give you that racy feeling and track-focused tyres.
2023 BMW M2 Coupe Price
The 2023 BMW M2 Coupe price will start from £61,495 for the standard model. Expect the additional packages to hike up the price, as well as the Competition version to cost a lot more.
