The all-new MG ZS has been revealed, marking the second generation of MG’s popular compact SUV. It boasts a refreshed design and introduces hybrid technology. Available for order now, prices begin at £21,995, almost £4,000 cheaper than the Ford Puma.

At its launch, the new ZS comes exclusively with MG's Hybrid+ powertrain, the same system used in the acclaimed MG3. This setup combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a total power output of 193bhp. The electric motor contributes 134bhp and 250Nm of torque, enabling the ZS to accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds, as per MG’s claims.

The 1.83kWh battery allows for short bursts of all-electric driving, which helps the ZS Hybrid+ achieve a fuel economy of up to 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 115g/km. Given the small battery size, there’s no need for external charging, as it is replenished through regenerative braking or the petrol engine.

David Allison, MG UK's head of product and planning, has indicated that a purely petrol-powered version of the new ZS will be introduced early next year. However, there will not be an all-electric variant. Instead, the current MG ZS EV’s successor will be an entirely different electric SUV, which will share its platform with the MG4 hatchback.

In terms of design, the new MG ZS shares a strong visual connection with its siblings, the MG3 supermini and the new MG HS mid-sized SUV. The latest ZS features a wide, prominent front grille, complemented by slim air intakes on either side. The signature octagonal MG badge sits on the nose, while a contrasting section on the lower bumper mimics a skid plate. Additionally, full LED lighting is present at both the front and rear.

The boot capacity of the new MG ZS is 443 litres, which is slightly smaller by five litres compared to the previous model but still surpasses what is offered by the Nissan Juke and Peugeot 2008. Folding down the rear seats increases the storage space to 1,457 litres, 82 litres more than its predecessor.

The MG ZS Hybrid+ is available in two trims: SE and Trophy. Standard features include a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with built-in sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and keyless entry.

For an additional £2,500, the Trophy trim upgrades include 18-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree surround-view camera, heated front seats and steering wheel, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and leather-effect upholstery.

Every model also comes with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty and the ‘MG Pilot’ suite of safety and driver-assistance features. This system includes active emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and traffic jam assist.
