BMW introduced the updated 1 Series earlier this year, and now its saloon counterpart, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, has followed suit. While it retains the same platform, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe boasts significant design updates, fresh technology, and a mild-hybrid engine, marking it as a new generation in the lineup.
Replacing the F44, the new F74 generation 2 Series Gran Coupe steps in to compete with premium saloons like the Audi A3 Saloon and the Mercedes CLA. Pricing starts at £33,800 for the 220 M Sport, which is slightly higher than the outgoing model's £33,165. Additionally, the M235 xDrive hot hatch comes with a price tag of £42,850, reflecting a £1,200 decrease from its predecessor. The new 2 Series Gran Coupe is available to order now but deliveries are scheduled for March 2025.
Under the hood, the 2 Series Gran Coupe comes with BMW's new 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol mild-hybrid engine. This powertrain delivers 168bhp and 280Nm of torque in the 220 variant, reaching 0-62mph in about 7.8 seconds. Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. While official fuel economy figures are yet to be announced, it’s expected to surpass the previous non-hybrid 220i, which claimed 46 mpg.
On the design front, the 2 Series Gran Coupe mirrors much of the 1 Series’ aesthetics with some distinctions. The wider grille, flatter front end, and thinner headlights give it a sleek, aggressive look. Its rear end takes inspiration from models like the X2 and 1 Series, with new taillights and a sportier stance. The signature ‘Hofmeister kink’ in the rear pillar now features a ‘2’ emblem, and the side skirts have been reprofiled for a sharper appearance. Gloss black detailing wraps around the lower section of the car for an extra touch of sophistication.
Inside, the cabin closely resembles that of the new 1 Series, featuring a 10.7-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch driver’s display. A notable difference is the removal of the rotary iDrive controller in favour of touch controls, a change attributed to cost-saving measures. However, BMW’s new OS9 system makes the touchscreen easily accessible and user-friendly. Other interior updates include redesigned air vents inspired by the X3 and repositioned door handles and window controls. M Sport models add sportier touches such as M-colored stitching, a 12-o’clock marker on the steering wheel, and optional massage functions for the seats. Luggage capacity stands at 430 litres, offering 130 litres more than the new 1 Series.
In terms of performance, BMW has worked on improving the handling of the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Enhancements include updated shock absorbers, revised bushings, and a new traction control system to provide a more dynamic driving experience. For those opting for the M235 xDrive, it packs a punch with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 296bhp and 400Nm of torque, reaching 0-62mph in around five seconds. Power is distributed to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system, which includes a mechanical differential lock for the front wheels. The M235 also benefits from upgraded front brakes sourced from the M3 and M4, along with a head-up display, Alcantara M Sport seats, and a quad-tip exhaust system as standard.
The new 2 Series Gran Coupe comes in two solid and seven metallic paint options, with the choice of a contrasting gloss black roof. M Sport trims, which form the entry-level offering, come standard with 18-inch wheels, gloss black exterior accents, and a rear spoiler, with optional 19-inch wheels available for those seeking a sportier look.
Overall, while the new 2 Series Gran Coupe shares its platform with the 1 Series, the host of design changes, tech upgrades, and performance tweaks ensure it stands apart, making it a serious contender in the premium compact saloon market.
