20th Anniversary Golf R Is The Fastest On The Nürburgring
The 20th anniversary Volkswagen Golf R is the fastest Golf R on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife race track thanks to its tuned 333 bhp engine.
It's official. The 20th anniversary Volkswagen Golf R (we'll refer to it as the 20R for this article) is the fastest-ever Golf vehicle on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife racetrack, as well as the public roads.
We wrote a post not too long ago discussing the changes for the 20th-anniversary Golf R but long story short, the engine gets a 12 bhp increase, some software updates and changes to the turbo compared to the standard Golf R Mk8.
These changes are enough to propel the 20R from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The standard Golf R Mk8 had an official 0 to 60 mph of 4.7 seconds so that extra 12 bhp does help. VW usually understate the figures, for reasons unknown, so it's possible the 20R is even faster than 4.6 seconds.
So just how much did the 20R beat the previous Nürburgring-Nordschleife record that was set with a standard Golf R Mk8? By a whole 4 seconds actually, with the 20R completing the 20,832 km long racetrack in 7:47.31 minutes.
4 seconds might not seem like a lot but these records are set by track drivers that are pushing the cars to their physical limits each time, meaning a whole 4 seconds is incredible! Especially when you consider most records cannot be achieved again even by the same driver, due to difficult it was for them to achieve the record in the first place.
The 20R is not only the fastest Golf R on the Nürburgring but the fastest Golf R ever made and most definitely the fastest Golf R on our public roads. Volkswagen has done an excellent job pulling 328 bhp out of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder EA888 block. And it has proven to be a reliable engine too.
