Skoda is broadening its range of plug-in hybrid vehicles by introducing the new Kodiaq iV, which will be available from £41,935 OTR. This technology, which debuted with the Octavia iV in 2021, is now being applied to the Kodiaq for the first time. The new model promises an enhanced all-electric driving range and improved efficiency.
Now open for orders, the Kodiaq iV boasts a drivetrain that was integrated into the SUV’s design from the outset. This integration has enabled Skoda’s design and engineering teams to strategically position the components to maximise the driving range while maintaining a superb driving experience.
The second-generation plug-in hybrid system from Skoda features a 1.5 TSI 150 PS four-cylinder turbocharged engine, paired with a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that produces 116PS and 330Nm of torque. The motor is ingeniously incorporated into the DQ400e DSG gearbox and is separated from the engine by a clutch to ensure a compact drivetrain assembly.
Similar to the first-generation PHEV drivetrain, the motor can propel the vehicle on its own or in conjunction with the engine. The motor also functions as a starter for the engine, replacing the traditional alternator.
In pure electric mode, the second-generation PHEV system enables local emission-free travel for up to 75 miles (in the five-seat, SE model). For extended trips, drivers can switch to hybrid mode, allowing the petrol engine and electric motor to work together.
A key factor in the increased range of the new Kodiaq iV is its larger battery pack. The vehicle is equipped with a 25.7kWh battery (19.7kWh usable) situated under the rear seats. This battery, which includes integrated water cooling, powers the electric motor, stores energy from regenerative braking, and supplies energy to the heating and air conditioning systems.
Another notable advancement in the second-generation PHEV drivetrain is the introduction of faster charging capabilities. For the first time, a Skoda plug-in hybrid can accept a DC rapid charge. With a peak charging speed of up to 50kW, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes. The inclusion of a CCS socket allows the Kodiaq iV to be charged at any public rapid charging station. Additionally, the Kodiaq iV can be charged using an AC supply via a standard Type 2 plug, with a maximum AC charge rate of 11kW, achieving a full charge in about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
