Electric cars are the future of mobility, but when they become commonplace on our roads is difficult to predict. Until important questions such as how much it costs to charge an electric car are answered, consumers will find it difficult to adopt this new breed of car.

To answer this question, we're taking a look at the VW e-Golf, and we hope to try and ease any concerns you might have about electric cars and their cost to run. The most recent update to the e-Golf brought with it a range of improvements including the extremely popular Active Info Display, a new 9.2" infotainment system and, as Volkswagen are keen to show off, the world's first zero-emission vehicle to have gesture control technology.

So, how much does this model cost to charge? Volkswagen claim that the new e-Golf, which is capable of travelling more than 120 miles in everyday driving conditions, costs just £3.10 - on average - to fully charge. This will take approximately ten hours when plugged into AC power, but just one hour when plugged into DC power.

This estimated cost to charge is based on energy tariff rates taken from six major energy companies in the UK, on a charging time of 13 hours using a 240-volt household socket. Note that, as mentioned above, your charging time is likely to be lower so it could cost you even less! Whichever way you look at those numbers, the e-Golf is cheap to run.  In fact, if you charged your VW e-Golf three times a week (for an approximate 360-mile range), it would cost you less than £500 for a full year!

So, now we know how much it costs to charge the Volkswagen e-Golf, there are a few more things you need to know before deciding whether an electric car is right for you.

How Do You Charge The Volkswagen E-Golf?

There are three different ways you can charge your VW e-Golf. Firstly, you can use a standard 3-pin (UK) household plug. This gives you the flexibility to plug in anywhere you can find a 3-pin plug socket, including the ever-increasing public charging stations. Although your local coffee shop might frown upon you reeling in an extension cord to a plug socket, charging from a dedicated socket will take around 11-13 hours to fully charge.

The second option is to install a Wall Box at your home or work. The wall box increases the charging performance of the e-Golf, reducing the charging time to around 8 hours. This is ideal for overnight charging, or during the day if you're at work. A number of the large energy companies are subsidising these, so they can be picked up for around £115. Finally, there is the CCS (Combined Charging System) which provides a faster charging method. These systems allow you to charge your battery to approximately 80% in just 35 minutes.

This is a perfect option for someone travelling longer distances on motorways as a lot of motorway services now have dedicated electric charging points with CCS technology that allows you to top up your battery levels while you grab a cup of coffee.

What Is The Volkswagen e-Golf's Performance?

It's still early days for electric vehicles, and most people think that their performance isn't as good as petrol or diesel models, but the difference isn't as significant as you may think. The top range is just over 120 miles in everyday driving situations, which is lower than a petrol or diesel, but the cost to 'refuel' is significantly lower as well. The 0-62mph is 9.6 seconds with a top speed of 93mph - this might sound a bit slow, but we expect that this is suitable for most commuters or day-to-day driving. The CO2 output is, obviously, zero - this will be a significant factor in the coming years with London, and other cities, introducing new charges for cars that put out harmful pollution from their engines. The e-Golf also has 163bhp, which is better than some lower-end Golf models.

Another thing that makes the e-Golf worth buying over its combustion engine siblings is that - due to the reduction of complicated, moving parts in the engine - the car is less likely to break. Plus, Volkswagen will provide a huge eight-year warranty on the battery to make sure that everything is in top condition for a seriously long time.
