Kia unveiled the EV3 back in May 2024, presenting a compact electric SUV designed to make sustainable mobility accessible. With a range of up to 372 miles (WLTP) and fast-charging capability, the EV3 is built to make the transition from traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV) seamless.
Kia’s engineers focused on setting a new benchmark for compact electric SUVs, introducing advanced features like intelligent regenerative braking and the ability to power external devices such as camping gear. This opens up new lifestyle opportunities for EV drivers. The EV3 also incorporates world-first innovations that bring tangible benefits to its occupants.
One of the key highlights is Kia’s enhanced i-Pedal technology, which advances the concept of one-pedal driving. This system allows drivers to adjust regenerative braking levels from 0 to 3, depending on driving conditions. Level 3 is ideal for stop-start traffic, while lower levels allow for smoother coasting and a more engaging experience on winding roads. The i-Pedal system, available even in Reverse, provides more control and efficiency, saving energy with minimal effort.
Another notable feature is the Smart Regenerative System. By holding the steering wheel paddle, drivers can engage this system, which scans the road ahead and adjusts speed based on the surroundings. It uses sensors and navigation data to decelerate for sharp curves, speed bumps, or roundabouts, making city driving easier and safer. Unlike previous versions that relied solely on GPS, the new system reacts to a wider range of navigation inputs and can bring the EV3 to a complete stop.
The development team prioritised range anxiety, equipping the EV3 with a best-in-class battery to ensure it offers an impressive all-electric range. Aerodynamics also play a crucial role, with hours of wind tunnel testing refining the SUV’s performance. Features like optimised wheel shapes, underbody covers, and a narrow rear design contribute to a sleek drag coefficient of 0.26Cd.
Inside the EV3, a Driving Range Guide provides real-time feedback on driving efficiency, encouraging owners to maximise range. The system indicates optimal driving behaviour, helping users strike a balance between performance and economy. In colder climates, the EV3’s heat absorption system, advanced heat pump, and low-temperature charging software ensure the vehicle charges quickly and maintains battery performance, even in harsh conditions. A liquid-cooled battery and fast-charging capabilities allow charging from 10 to 80% in just 31 minutes under ideal conditions.
The EV3’s THIN HVAC system enhances comfort by delivering efficient climate control while providing additional footwell space for front-seat passengers. With Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging, the SUV can power devices like laptops or coffee machines, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts or those living off-grid.
Looking ahead, Kia plans to offer all-wheel drive (AWD) and high-performance GT versions of the EV3, expanding the range and catering to a broader audience. With cutting-edge technology and a focus on sustainable, stress-free driving, the EV3 sets a new standard for compact electric SUVs.
