Mazda Unveils Unique 'Iconic SP' Concept Sports Car

The Mazda 'Iconic SP' concept car has been unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show. It features a one-of-a-kind rotary EV system powertrain.

The passion for driving is ingrained in the very DNA of each Mazda designer and engineer, a love that becomes most evident in the globally best-selling roadster, the Mazda MX-5.

During the Japan Mobility Show, alongside the grand introduction of the revamped 2024 MX-5, Mazda took the wraps off the Mazda Iconic SP, a concept car that ingeniously blends a dual rotary powertrain with an electric vehicle (EV) platform, a powertrain approach most recently introduced in the all-new Mazda MX-30 R-EV.

The Mazda Iconic SP represents a compact sports car concept engineered to adapt to a new era, underscoring the company's unwavering commitment to crafting products that cater to customers' deep-seated affection for driving and automobiles.

This concept achieves a remarkably low centre of gravity, delivering exceptional driving performance. Its distinctive proportions are made attainable by a low-profile bonnet, accomplished by positioning the lightweight and compact rotary engine at the heart of the vehicle.

The concept of a two-rotor rotary EV system promises a highly adaptable engine with a flexible layout, capable of running on various fuels, including hydrogen. This technology is uniquely Mazda and particularly well-suited for sports car configurations. Moreover, when the battery is charged with electricity sourced from renewable energy, it becomes possible to drive in a nearly carbon-neutral state.

Mazda's President and CEO, Masahiro Moro, shared his excitement during the unveiling of the concept, stating:

In addition to the Mazda Iconic SP, Mazda's stand showcases various iterations of the brand's iconic MX-5, including the latest MX-5, a substantial update to the fourth-generation model featuring new LED headlights, rear lights, and interior enhancements designed to elevate the driving experience.

The stand also boasts a first-generation MX-5, an enduring symbol of Mazda's dedication to the pleasure of driving. Furthermore, a two-thirds scale model of the MX-5 is available to offer a simulated driving experience for children, and there's even an MX-5 that can be controlled using only the driver's hands.
