No, it's not an early April fool's joke. The next Dacia car is called the 'Bigster' and the name accurately reflects the size of the upcoming 2025 SUV.
Dacia is going from strength to strength in the UK thanks to their competitively priced cars. Just last year in the UK Dacia doubled its sales for 2022 thanks to its strong brand identity and affordable vehicles. At a time when the cost of living is at an all-time high (as well as car costs), Dacia remains a beacon of shining light with its excellent value-for-money vehicles.
The Dacia Duster has been a top-selling SUV for a while but now Dacia wants to build another SUV to sit above the Duster. Larger and commanding more presence, Dacia has named this new SUV the 'Bigster'. And no, it's not an early April fool's joke. The Bigster is a big (no pun intended) SUV that will become Dacia's flagship car. It will take on the likes of the MINI Countryman and the extremely popular Volkswagen Tiguan.
Dacia recently brought out the Jogger MPV, which has proven a popular and affordable 7-seater. However, research shows that MPV cars are falling out of favour in the UK and other Euro countries, as SUVs and CUVs are rising in popularity.
This is why Dacia is capitalising on the growing SUV trend with the Bigster. It's no secret most companies are doing that such as Lamborghini with the Urus SUV and Ferrari with the Purosangue.
So just how big is the Dacia Bigster? Dacia says the SUV will measure 4.6 metres long and to compare against other cars (and to give you an idea), it's similar in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan or the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Obviously given its size it will have a fairly spacious interior and Dacia has promised lots of room for passengers.
Dacia is employing the CMF-B architecture for the Bigster, which is what they use on the successful Sandero. The CMF-B does offer a wide range of powertrains, as well as the ability to add hybrid power. Hybrid powertrains have been historically avoided by Dacia due to them pushing up the price but perhaps Dacia has found a way to employ them in an affordable manner.
For now, Dacia is being tight-lipped about the exact powertrains the Bigster will have. But we'd imagine they will employ something with enough power to get the big old thing moving. The Volkswagen Tiguan has a 1.5 petrol engine that offers 150PS and other similar SUVs include a 1.5 like the Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage. The Nissan Juke offers a 1.0-litre petrol and it's possible the Bigster will have a 1.0-litre option to keep prices down.
The Hyundai Tucson hybrid comes with a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre motor and that's enough to pull numbers of 230PS. We think the Bigster won't be far off, with maybe something like the 138bhp 1.6-litre hybrid motor that comes with the Renault Clio E-Tech.
Three-cylinder engines are stronger these days thanks to constantly evolving technology. Don't be surprised if the Bigster comes with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder that will be pushing up to 200bhp with hybrid power.
Whatever Dacia decides, they will decide with the focus being on offering a budget SUV to their cost-conscious customers. Dacia has succeeded in creating a very specific niche and it's one they are extremely successful at.
With frugalness at the forefront of Dacia's decisions, we would imagine the Bigster to start around £20,000. The Jogger MPV started at £17,000 so £20,000 seems like a good estimate for a larger and higher-up SUV.
