The New 2023 Aston Martin DB12 Volante is the Ultimate Open-Top Super Tourer

Aston Martin finds itself amidst a comprehensive rejuvenation of its entire lineup, and the forthcoming DB12 Volante emerges as the next progressive stride in revitalizing the British automaker's portfolio.

Following in the footsteps of the DB12 coupe, this fresh "open-top super tourer," as designated by the company, builds upon the formula employed for its solid-roof sibling while infusing an added layer of flair with its convertible rooftop.

Unveiled during the Monterey Car Week 2023, the DB12 Volante showcases a fabric roof (available in four distinct hues) that integrates eight layers of acoustic sound insulation. This roof can be lowered or raised in 14 or 16 seconds, respectively, even while cruising at speeds of up to 31mph.

Aston asserts that it's designed to operate smoothly even when driving against a headwind at 31mph, and the roof mechanism can also be remotely activated using the vehicle's key.

The transition from coupe to convertible inevitably involves a compromise in structural integrity, prompting Aston to bolster the DB12 Volante's torsional rigidity. This enhancement involves reinforcing the suspension mounts, especially at the rear, and introducing an underbody engine cross brace.

These improvements come in addition to the extensive upgrades that transformed the DB12 into a substantially new iteration, departing from its predecessor, the DB11.

Aston emphasizes that these structural modifications yield dividends in lateral stiffness, thereby augmenting suspension performance and refinement.

Furthermore, the brand purports that the Volante's new generation of adaptive dampers yields a remarkable "500% increase in bandwidth." This suspension refinement predominantly focuses on the rear spring rate and damper settings compared to the coupe model. According to Aston's claims, the electronically assisted power steering is designed with a fixed ratio to ensure a natural response rate.

These chassis enhancements play a pivotal role, enabling the Volante to seamlessly accommodate the same handcrafted, twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine found in the DB12 coupe. This powerhouse generates an output of 671bhp and a torque of 800Nm.

The engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission that channels power to the rear axle. Utilizing launch control, the DB12 Volante accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 3.7 seconds—a mere tenth of a second slower than its coupe counterpart. It achieves an impressive top speed of 202mph.

Including an electronic limited-slip differential comes standard, while the vehicle offers a selection of five "dynamic modes" encompassing Wet, GT, Sport, Sport+, and Individual settings.

These modes influence various aspects such as engine and gearbox responses, steering and suspension settings, and a four-stage ESC system that fine-tunes the car's behaviour. Optionally available carbon-ceramic brakes, which significantly reduce weight by 27kg compared to standard steel components, can be equipped behind the DB12 Volante's 21-inch alloy wheels.

Roberto Fedeli, Aston's Chief Technology Officer, underscores that the new Volante effectively maintains its class-leading performance and handling prowess. He highlights the DB12 platform's inherent brilliance and the dedicated efforts to preserve the excellence of its powertrain and chassis in an open-top rendition.

Fedeli comments, "No longer just the 'softer' alternative, the DB12 Volante presents the exhilaration of an authentic sports car while delivering the distinctive delight and satisfaction that only an Aston Martin convertible can provide."

The Volante's sleek and fluid design, characterized by its notably low rear deck and broad shoulders, is achievable due to the K-fold roof mechanism. This mechanism results in a low-profile concealed area when the roof is folded down.

With the roof stowed away, Aston maintains that the DB12 Volante boasts a best-in-class "stack height" of a mere 260mm. This ingenious roof packaging also contributes to the improvement of the boot space. The Volante ensures a total luggage capacity of 262 litres, and the 2+2 seating configuration adds practicality to the cabin.

Much like the exterior design extending from the front to the windshield, a significant portion of the interior design echoes that of the coupe model. The Volante incorporates a centrally positioned 10.25-inch touchscreen featuring Aston's latest infotainment system—a substantial upgrade from the DB11, as our experience from the DB12's launch indicates.

The vehicle retains the same level of features and connectivity, inclusive of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A standard 11-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system enhances the auditory experience, with an optional 15-speaker setup available as well.

Marek Reichman, Aston's Chief Creative Officer, underscores that the DB12 Volante's exterior and interior design mirror advancements in engineering and technology. The design showcases a muscular physique and an athletic stance that aptly reflects its formidable performance, while the interior boasts a clean and contemporary layout that represents a bold interpretation of modern luxury.

For those seeking an elevated level of personalization beyond the standard options, Aston's Q customization service offers a plethora of possibilities for colour, materials, bespoke detailing, and other design and craftsmanship nuances. The company anticipates a substantial interest in this offering from customers.

Anticipated to carry a price tag of approximately £200,000 upon its release—representing a premium of about £15,000 over the coupe model—the DB12 Volante is set to commence production in the third quarter of this year, with deliveries scheduled for the conclusion of 2023 (fourth quarter).
