Pricing has been unveiled for the newly introduced Audi A5 saloon and A5 Avant in the UK, with the saloon starting at £41,950 on the road. This new A5 line-up is set to entirely replace the outgoing A4, marking the first all-new combustion-powered model from Audi in several years, and signalling the start of a refreshed range due over the next three years.
Although Audi previously had a model named the A5 in its range, the two-door coupe and cabriolet versions will not be returning. Instead, the Sportback has been rebranded as the new A5 Saloon, despite its hatchback-style tailgate being similar to that of the previous A5 Sportback. Meanwhile, the A4 Avant has made way for the A5 Avant.
Both models will be offered in Sport, S Line, and Edition 1 trims, along with high-performance 'S' variants in the form of the S5 Saloon (which, like the A5, retains its hatchback tailgate) and S5 Avant. As always, Audi will provide a wide array of optional packages, including features like Bang & Olufsen audio systems, head-up displays, and ambient lighting, allowing buyers to customise their vehicles beyond the standard specifications.
The base specification is quite comprehensive. The A5 Saloon in Sport trim starts at £41,950 (with the Avant costing an additional £1,900) and includes features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, ‘comfort’ suspension, LED headlights, an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit, a 14.5-inch OLED central touchscreen, three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, and adaptive cruise control.
S Line trim begins at £44,100 and adds 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, S Line exterior styling, privacy glass, sports seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and brushed aluminium inlays. The £49,100-and-up Edition 1 trim further enhances the package with 20-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, a black styling pack, a top-view parking camera, and additional driver assistance and safety features.
Engine options across all three trims include a 148bhp 2-litre turbocharged petrol, a 200bhp version of the same engine for a premium of around £2,300, a 200bhp TDI turbo diesel (adding approximately £2,700), and a diesel variant paired with quattro all-wheel drive (an extra £1,500 or so).
At the top of the range are the S5 Saloon and S5 Avant, priced at £68,700 and £70,600, respectively. While the previous S4 models were diesel-powered in recent years, the new S5 returns to petrol power with a 3-litre V6 turbocharged engine, producing 364bhp and achieving 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. Standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, Pearl Nappa leather upholstery, digital OLED tail lights, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
All models in the new A5 range, including the S5, come equipped with a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard. The TDI diesel and the S5’s TFSI V6 also feature a 48-volt starter-generator and energy recuperation system. Notably, there is no fully electric variant in this line-up, as that role will be filled by an all-new A4, expected to arrive in a few years.
The new A5 and S5 models are now available to order, with the first deliveries expected in November.
