Audi is preparing to launch the A3 TFSI e, a plug-in hybrid that features a notable 88-mile range in pure-electric mode, more than double that of its predecessor. This significant boost in electric-only driving range is made possible by the introduction of a larger 25.7kWh battery (19.7kWh usable), replacing the previous 13kWh unit. For added convenience, the vehicle now supports 50kW DC rapid charging, allowing drivers to recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.
At the core of the updated plug-in hybrid system is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an integrated electric motor. The electric motor generates 114bhp, enabling a top speed of 87mph in electric-only mode. Combined with the petrol engine, the system delivers a total of 201bhp and 350Nm of torque, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 7.4 seconds.
Audi has fine-tuned the suspension to account for the extra weight of the larger battery, which is positioned under the rear seats. This includes stiffer spring rates and sportier damper settings to ensure a dynamic driving experience. Additionally, when decelerating, the car can coast with the engine off, and energy is recaptured through regenerative braking. Steering wheel paddles allow drivers to adjust the level of energy regeneration.
Set to hit the market in November with a starting price of £39,150, the A3 40 TFSI e will be available in three trim levels: Sport, S Line, and Black Edition. Standard features include Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad for smartphones, three-zone climate control, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Thanks to the plug-in hybrid's versatility, it combines the efficiency of electric driving with the reliability of a petrol engine. This makes it a practical choice for both city commuting and longer journeys, offering a seamless transition between power sources depending on the driving conditions.
