Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is gearing up to introduce the next-generation successors to the present Transporter 6.1 and Caravelle 6.1 models in 2025.

This next iteration boasts a significantly expanded set of standard features compared to its predecessors, encompassing a digital cockpit, central display, the latest assist systems, and an entirely revamped array of highly efficient drive systems.

Marking a milestone, this product line will debut with options for turbodiesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.

Retaining the distinctive Volkswagen essence

The new Transporter bears a clean front and rear design, unmistakably placing it within the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles family.

Standard LED headlights at the front not only accentuate its appearance but also contribute to its highly aerodynamic design for commercial vehicles of this stature. Correspondingly, LED tail light clusters adorn the rear as standard.

As with earlier versions, the new Transporter models can be tailored with either a boot lid or wide-opening wing doors.

Enhanced standard equipment

New standard equipment now encompasses new LED headlights and tail light clusters, along with features such as an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold functionality, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster (Digital Cockpit and an advanced infotainment system (inclusive of DAB+, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, online services, and a 13-inch touchscreen).

It also will feature a multifunction steering wheel, rain sensor, Lane Assist for lane keeping, Front Assist for Autonomous Emergency Braking, and a Dynamic Road Sign Display coupled with wrong-way warning.

Various body configurations to be available

Volkswagen will present the new Transporter in various body configurations, including panel van options like panel van Plus, panel van with L-partition, Kombi with rear windows, and a long dropside vehicle with a double cab.

Additionally, a Caravelle variant will be available later. Both Kombi and panel van models will offer optional high roofs and extended wheelbases. Notably, the high roof can now be paired with the shorter wheelbase as well.

Augmented exterior dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the new Transporter extends to 5,050 mm in length, marking a 146 mm increase compared to its predecessor.

The wheelbase has expanded by 97 mm to 3,100 mm, with an optional 400 mm extension (total length: 5,450 mm). Its exterior width stands at 2,032 mm, 128 mm wider than the predecessors (excluding exterior mirrors).

The augmented exterior dimensions translate into greater interior space, accommodating more cargo or passengers with increased comfort.

Boosted load capacity, payload, and maximum trailer weight are attributed to the enlarged exterior dimensions of the new model generation.

Improved load capacity, payload and maximum trailer weight

The Transporter's maximum payload and trailer weight have significantly improved, with the maximum stowage volume now reaching 5.8 m for the Transporter with the standard wheelbase and standard roof.

The payload for the standard wheelbase Transporter with TDI drive has risen to 1.3 tonnes. Moreover, Volkswagen has elevated the maximum trailer weight (braked with a 12% gradient) to 2.8 tonnes for the diesel panel van with power outputs of 110 kW and 125 kW.

Notably, the maximum dynamic roof load has surged from 150 kg to 170 kg.

By precisely tailoring vehicle properties for diverse applications, Volkswagen distinguishes commercial vehicles from private and recreational vehicles.

The New Transporter, falling within the B-segment, aligns more closely with commercial vehicle characteristics than ever before.

Introducing an innovative powertrain range

Volkswagen will debut the new Transporter with plug-in hybrid drive (eHybrid) and all-electric drives (eTransporter) alongside the turbodiesel engines (TDI) at a later stage.

Initial sales will commence with TDI engines for vehicles with N1-type approval, followed by a plug-in hybrid drive and four electric drives ranging from 85 kW to 210 kW.

The electric models will feature batteries with an energy content (gross) of 83 kWh, with the base version offering a 54 kWh battery (gross).

TDI and eHybrid models come with front-wheel drive, while the all-electric models have rear-wheel drive, with plans for an all-wheel drive version later.
