Porsche & Lamborghini Break Records In 2021 Despite Covid
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic and worldwide lockdowns in 2021, luxury high-performance manufacturers Porsche & Lamborghini broke sales records.
You would think that sales of expensive luxury and high-performance brands like Porsche and Lamborghini would grind to a halt during the past few years, but it's in fact not the case. Porsche and Lamborghini have recently had one of their strongest years yet, with 2021 showing both brands set records across the globe, according to auto news site Exhaustnotes.
Porsche 2021 sales records
2021 was Porsche' strongest year in the history of the brand. They delivered a total of 301,915 vehicles to customers worldwide, which was an increase from 2020 of 11%. The biggest sales regions were America and China.
The Porsche SUVs had led the sales records, with the Macan selling 88,362 and the Cayenne selling 83,071. In third place was the brand new all-electric Porsche Taycan, which sold a grand total of 41,296.
On the saloon and roadster side of things, the iconic Porsche 911 sold 38,464 cars whilst the ever-popular Panamera saloon saw 30,220 deliveries. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman accounted for a total of 20,502 sales.
Porsche executive board member Detlev von Platen said: "Demand remains high and our order books are looking very robust, so we start 2022 full of momentum and confidence in all regions of the world. The overall result is very promising and shows the strategy to further electrify our fleet is working and is in line with demand and the preferences of our customers".
Lamborghini 2021 sales records
Lamborghini also managed to break their own personal records and have the best year ever in 2021. With a total of 8,405 cars delivered, this marks an increase of 13% compared to sales in 2020.
2021 saw Lamborghini release several new cars including the Huracan STO, the Aventador Ultimae and the revised version of the famous Countach, the Countach LPI 800-4 (which sold out instantly). However, Lamborgini says it was the super performance SUV Urus that was their best seller.
The strongest number of sales came from the USA, China, Germany and the UK. Lamborghini are expecting 2022 to be an even better year than 2021, with them planning to unveil four brand new products over the coming months. In 2023 their first hybrid car will be launched and a fully electric car is expected around 2025.
Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephen Wilkelmann said: "This record has provided confirmation of four factors for us: the solidity of our strategic plan, our brand’s outstanding international reputation, the competence and passion of our people and the exceptional professionalism and dynamism shown by our 173 dealers in 52 markets, who have continued to invest alongside us at a challenging, uncertain time. In 2022 we’ll be doing our utmost to consolidate the current performance and get ready for the arrival of our future hybrid range from 2023 onwards".
