The 2024 next-generation Skoda Superb will feature better powertrains and more versatility than ever. The practical estate is making a big comeback.

Skoda recently unveiled teaser images of the highly anticipated fourth-generation Superb, giving us a glimpse of what's to come in the 2024 model. Though earlier side profile drawings were shrouded in mystery, the new set of images provides a clearer view of the vehicle.

Having already tested the prototype of the Superb Estate, it left a lasting impression, impressing on multiple fronts. The official reveal is scheduled for November, with the car expected to hit the UK market early in 2024.

Despite the camouflage on the Superb Estate in the latest images, some exciting changes are apparent. The front sports a more three-dimensional grille flanked by sleeker headlights featuring advanced LED technology. The lower grille shape has been redesigned, and isolated air intakes can be seen at the sides.

While the classic Skoda badge indent remains, the clamshell bonnet integrates less seamlessly due to the intricate headlight design.

From the side view, both the saloon and estate versions exhibit a generous rear overhang, while a sharp crease adds a touch of elegance to the flanks. The rear of the car features a refined bumper design and eye-catching C-shaped rear light units, reminiscent of the new Fabia, ensuring a dynamic light pattern for following traffic during nighttime drives.

Under the surface, the new Skoda Superb is built on an improved version of the MQB evo platform. Skoda proudly took on the development of the chassis, which will also serve as the foundation for the upcoming VW Passat.

The car has grown slightly in length and wheelbase, enhancing the already spacious interior. The Superb Estate's boot capacity has been raised from 660 to 690 litres, offering even more practicality.

In terms of powertrain options, the new Superb will not have a purely electric version in this generation. Instead, it will boast the latest generation of VW Group's combustion engines. Customers can choose from two 2.0-litre diesel variants, with power outputs of either 148bhp or 192bhp.

On the petrol side, there are three choices available. For the first time, Skoda introduces a mild-hybrid option, featuring a 1.5-litre TSI engine with 148bhp. Additionally, a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit comes with power outputs of 204bhp or 265bhp.

The plug-in hybrid version combines a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with a 25.7kWh battery, providing an extended pure-electric range of over 62 miles, a significant increase from the previous PHEV's 44-mile range.

Moving inside, the new Superb will undergo a complete interior overhaul, closely resembling Skoda's all-electric models. This design direction has sparked some debate within the VW Group, following mixed responses to the interface in the eighth-gen Golf.

Former Skoda CEO (and current CEO of VW), Thomas Schafer has said:

"We’ll see some elements from the Enyaq iV, but we think we need to do more of the traditional controls, not only playing with the biggest display in the industry but also having elements that make sense for our brand. If there’s one brand that should be functional, clear and easy to use, it’s us"

To us, this sounds like they are being weary of the interface in the eighth-gen Golf and making it so that they are able to please most customers with access to both physical buttons and the infotainment system.
