The End Of An Era: Lamborghini Ends Aventador Production

The popular V-12 Lamborghini Aventador has now ended its production, closing an 11-year era for the widely successful supercar.

11 years and over 11,465 Aventadors made and delivered. That's nearly 3 cars sold per day. That's the legacy of the V-12 Lamborghini Aventador supercar and now it has finally come to an end.

Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini's chairman and CEO, said in a statement: "The Lamborghini Aventador was a game-changer at its launch, and the flagship Lamborghini model for 11 years of production."

Production was meant to end months ago but some Aventadors sank with the Felicity Ace cargo ship. This forced Lamborghini to begin production again to rebuild the cars that were deemed losses.

It's not all bad news, depending on your opinion of hybrid vehicles. A successor to the Aventador is currently in the works and will still feature a new V-12 hybrid engine, however, it will be a new V-12 unit and may have lower displacement in order to combat emissions laws.

The final model available was the Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae, which featured a 6.5-litre V-12 making 769 bhp. In order to combat emissions laws, it's possible they will have to drop the engine to something lower like a 5.0-litre V12 (for example). But it's mostly just speculation at this point.

This means the Aventador Ultimae is a true collector's item, being the last of its kind with a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V-12. We still believe the Aventador successor will use a naturally aspirated V-12 but with added power from a hybrid battery system.

Manufacturers lowering engine displacement to achieve emission targets isn't anything new. As Mercedes just last week announced the move from a 4.0-litre V8 engine on the C63 AMG to a 2.0-litre hybrid motor.

The main issue with hybrid cars is the weight. The battery and motor add a lot of weight to the car and that seriously changes the driving dynamics. Another issue is the fact that the EU requires a specific amount of range needed from hybrid vehicles to pass laws. Meaning Lamborghini cannot skimp out on battery size.
