The Future of Volkswagen: ID.7 & ID. GTI Concept Car
What is the future of Volkswagen in the coming years? By 2027 Volkswagen will launch eleven new all-electric models, including the ID. GTI concept car.
Volkswagen is ramping up its electric vehicle efforts, planning to introduce eleven new all-electric models by 2027. This ambitious push will position them as the manufacturer with the broadest electric vehicle range in Europe.
From affordable compact cars priced below 25,000 euros to spacious family sedans, Volkswagen is diversifying its electric lineup. They're also injecting the iconic GTI spirit into the electric realm with sporty GTI versions of select models from the all-electric ID. family, showcased by the ID.
GTI Concept unveiled at the IAA Mobility event in Munich. This concept car offers a glimpse of how Volkswagen is reimagining the GTI legacy in an electric context. The ID models currently have the GTX trim for VW's performance EVs (electric vehicles), so we're not sure whether the GTI and GTX trims will work alongside each other.
At the heart of this transformation is the ID.7, Volkswagen's first all-electric saloon boasting an expansive interior and an impressive range of up to 434 miles. Pre-sales have already begun, setting the stage for Volkswagen's electrified future.
The ID. GTI Concept signifies Volkswagen's commitment to preserving the GTI's essence while adapting it for electric mobility. Scheduled for a 2027 release, this vehicle, built on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform, combines the timeless GTI attributes – sportiness, iconic status, technological advancement, and accessibility – with electrifying performance, connectivity, and emotional appeal.
This fusion of driving pleasure and sustainability paves the way for GTI's electrified future, as the ban on brand-new ICEs (internal combustion engines) is on the horizon for the UK and Europe.
Volkswagen's shift towards electrification will culminate, by 2033 at the latest, in the exclusive production of electric vehicles in Europe. Until then, efficient combustion engine models like the new Passat Estate and Tiguan SUV will continue to be significant players in the product range.
These core models, now reinvigorated, can be explored at the IAA Mobility event from the 5th to the 10th of September. Additionally, plug-in hybrid versions of these models will be available, offering an electric range of around 62 miles and the convenience of DC fast charging capabilities.
Volkswagen's overarching strategy, ACCELERATE, emphasises customer-centric approaches and affordability. In 2026, the ID. 2all1, an electric vehicle priced below 25,000 euros, will expand Volkswagen's portfolio in the entry-level segment and challenge cheaper EVs like the GWM Ora Funky Cat or MG4.
The brand is also refreshing its design language, focusing on stability, likability, and excitement. Interior quality and user experience remain paramount, with upgraded software, infotainment features like the intelligent IDA voice assistant, larger displays, and on-demand services for navigation.
