One of the most successful TV shows of 2016 was the incredible Stranger Things. Thanks to the mixture of sci-fi, horror, mystery and many other genres, this show has stuck in our minds for a number of reasons. For us, there's also one big reason why we loved it so much, and that's the vintage VW models that almost act as extras that appear, sneakily, in the background of some important scenes.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]With Stranger Things Season 2 fast approaching (view the trailer at the end of this post), we take a look at all the Volkswagen models that appear in the show before fantasising about which models we hope will appear in October. Spoilers ahead.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator border_width="3" el_width="90"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Barb's Volkswagen Cabriolet

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="5050" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]We find out that Barb can drive when she takes Nancy to Steve's parent's house before [don't make me say it] she's taken away by the monster in the pool scene. It's only when Nancy is searching for her friend when we see her peek inside Barb's car, this 1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet (not to be mistaken for a Rabbit convertible). It fits the scene perfectly, keeping with the superbly executed Eighties theme of the show, but there is some contention over whether the showrunners intended this to be an earlier model as the 1988 version is some five years too late for the 'early Eighties' setting of the show. An easy mistake, and only noticed by those paying close attention.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

1966 Volkswagen Beetle

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="5051" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]In the background of the same scene, we see a Volkswagen Beetle (1966) in a similar colour belonging to an unknown driver. It would be so good to see these models front and centre in a few scenes as they appear in a few different locations. Hopefully they'll give a main character one of these to drive around in this year. There's nothing more iconic than a classic Beetle, so it's nice to see these appearing in faithful recreations of the Eighties like this.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Junkyard Beetle

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="5052" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]When the kids set off to the junk yard later in the show, you can clearly see this scrapped 1965 VW Beetle as they move around. It's heart-breaking seeing a Beetle in this condition, but it's just another shout-out to the German carmakers' most iconic vehicle. Even in this condition, it's not difficult to spot it, and it's subtle references like this that make the show so believable. Mixed in with other vintage cars, the Beetle is the finishing touch on a location we expect to see again this season as the kids try to figure out the mysteries placed in front of them.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

1986 Volkswagen Vanagon

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="5053" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]Seen in the background as Nancy wanders down a side street, the Vanagon chugs past for just a few seconds. The amount of effort the crew have gone to in creating a believable shot - one that is only there for a few seconds - is amazing. Likely owned by one of the hipsters of the town, we'll be keeping our eye out for this van again in the next season.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

1970 Volkswagen Beetle Cabrio

[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="5054" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]Take a peek at the Season 2 trailer below, and we get treated with another car owned by one of the residents of Hawkins. This 1970 VW Beetle Convertible is in the background as Will returns from his flicker in to the Upside-Down. This scene is set in a car park outside the gaming arcade that the kids will visit in the show, so we're hoping to get our eyes on even more vintage models as we get different shots during this moment.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator border_width="3" el_width="90"][vc_column_text]
