Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles reveals new Multivan
The Volkswagen Caravelle is the current minivan offering by VW and it has a fantastic history. But it's getting replaced by the all-new Multivan which will offer PHEV (plug-in hybrid) options.
Design
The new Volkswagen Multivan is getting a brand new exterior design which is a throwback to the 1998 Transporter T3 with a modern twist. It gets a brand new full-width grille with integrated headlights, giving it the modern VW design we've come to acknowledge.
The front air intakes have been painted in the same colour as the bottom half of the vehicle, paying tribute to the heritage of the rear air-cooled engines of the first three generations while showcasing the future of the hybrid powertrain.
The Multivan comes with LED headlight and DRLs (Daylight Running Lights) that can be upgraded to interactive IQ.LIGHT – LED matrix headlights, which offer a permanent full beam, without blinding oncoming drivers and dynamic cornering to provide precise illumination during bends.
Interior
On the inside, the Multivan is more spacious than ever and offers seven seats (2 front and 5 rear).
The Multivan comes with a brand new table design that can be moved between any of the seating rows. The table itself can store up to 3 cups via cup holders, is height adjustable and comes with a storage bin. It's also removable if you need extra space.
In the basic version, the Multivan comes with 469 litres of luggage space behind the third row of seats. You can remove the third row and the space increases to 1,844 litres. With all the seats removed up to the front seats, you get a total of 3,672 litres of space.
The Multivan comes with an automatic DSG gearbox which is controlled via shift-by-wire technology. This means the gearstick has been removed to give the front occupants more space.
The digital cockpit and infotainment system comes with the latest 'Ready 2 Discover' software which includes an integrated eSIM to deliver online safety and convenience features. We Connect Plus also provides additional services for the eHybrid, such as allowing owners to pre-set the vehicle inside temperature and to manage the charging process via smartphone.
Powertrain
The Volkswagen Multivan is based on the MQB platform and has a towing capacity of up to 2,000kg. The standard petrol fuel versions are available in a 1.5 TSI 136hp and 2.0 TSI 204hp. The diesel version will be a four-cylinder turbo that comes with 150hp.
The eHybrid option has a 1.4 TSI 150hp engine with an 85kW electric motor to produce a combined power output of 160kW / 218hp, providing silent, zero-emission driving when in electric-only mode for short, urban trips while giving customers the flexibility to enjoy longer journeys. The eHybrid uses a bespoke six-speed DSG gearbox.
