Volkswagen Confirms 2023 Release for Multivan California Campervan

Since VW has confirmed the 2023 release date for the Multivan California, we look into what you can expect from the family-friendly camper

As many of us already know, California is a household name within the Volkswagen brand. VW are incorporating this with the Volkswagen Multivan and they look to branch out from its extremely well-thought-of factory-built line of van-based camper models.

Volkswagen confirmed the Multivan California in their 2022 financial results statement, which did raise the question of 'when will this be released?'. Now we know it's in 2023, let's go into what else VW has said about this rather exciting Multivan.

The brand says that the next generation of California will be based on the Multivan MPV. Here's the quote "VW will build out the great success of its California model range by adding digital features and services to create California Universe". 

A "California Universe" is a term that could mean that Volkswagen is starting to place foundations for the California name to have its own range. There's currently only the Caddy California that has been produced, but it is very much expected that VW will produce camper versions of all the VW electric range and in particular the ID Buzz.

The Transport 6.1-based California 6.1 van will be replaced by the new California Multivan. This being said the California 6.1 is still currently on sale for around £60,000 but it is expected that the new model with be a sizable increase when it comes to price. For the first time with this model, the new California will sit on VW's MQB platform which does in fact allow for Plug-In Hybrid capabilities.

More good news! It is expected that the new camper will still feature all of its predecessors' features such as a Rear attached tent, sink and cooker kitchenette area, and pop-up roof tent alongside the camping staple of a foldout bed.
