Volkswagen Reveals New 2024 Tiguan Third Generation SUV
The significance of the Tiguan SUV in Volkswagen's ever-growing lineup cannot be overstated, as it has garnered over 7.5 million sales in just two generations. As well as this, the Tiguan has been Stables top-selling SUV for the past few years.
This underscores why the German automaker has chosen to revamp the formula for the all-new, third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, incorporating fresh engine choices, enhanced technology, increased spaciousness, versatility and utility, and a more refined design.
Efficient range of engines and eHybrid technology
A pivotal aspect of this transformation and Volkswagen's commitment to electrification lies in the upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrains, which now offer an impressive electric range of up to 62 miles. This marks a substantial increase of up to 30 miles compared to its predecessor, thanks to a larger 19.7kWh battery.
Two variants of the eHybrid model are on offer, each featuring the same battery and a 113bhp electric motor, combined with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Customers can choose between two power outputs: 201bhp and 350Nm of torque or 268bhp and 400Nm of torque. The Tiguan eHybrid supports rapid charging at up to 50kW, enabling a 10-80% recharge in approximately 25 minutes.
VW will also introduce mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI engines with power options of 128bhp or 148bhp. These eTSI powertrains, featuring a 48-volt electric system, a compact battery, and a belt starter-generator, enable engine-off coasting for enhanced efficiency.
For those desiring four-wheel drive capability, the 2.0-litre unit is the way to go. Both TSI turbo petrol engines incorporate 4Motion technology and deliver either 201 or 261bhp, while the 190bhp 2.0 TDI unit also includes four-wheel drive.
The lower-powered 148bhp 2.0 TDI model is exclusively front-wheel drive, with all Tiguan variants equipped with an automatic gearbox as standard.
Improved aerodynamics and a striking new design
The new Tiguan's sleeker exterior design contributes to improved efficiency, featuring a streamlined grille below the bonnet for enhanced aerodynamics. All models offer the option of Volkswagen's latest IQ.Light HD matrix LED headlights.
The third-generation Tiguan is 30mm longer than its predecessor, translating to increased interior space. Boot capacity has expanded by 37 litres across eTSI, TSI, and TDI models, resulting in a total of 652 litres. Additionally, the brand claims an improvement in headroom due to a slightly higher ceiling.
New cockpit layout and improved infotainment system
One of the most significant updates is the integration of VW's latest MIB4 infotainment system, available with either a 12.9 or 15-inch display. These units boast illuminated volume sliders and temperature controls, and VW asserts that the user interface has become more user-friendly.
Consequently, there is now a permanent climate control bar visible on the panel, while users have the option to customize up to five on-screen shortcut buttons at the top of the display, facilitating seamless transitions between functions. All vehicles come equipped with a 10.25-inch digital dashboard with four distinct configurable views.
No doubt the change in volume sliders and temperature controls has been from the criticism directed at the recent VW infotainment system, which customers found difficult to use.
Furthermore, a new rotary dial on the centre console allows users to select from various 'Atmospheres' that adjust interior lighting, chassis settings, and powertrain tuning.
Easy to understand range lineup
The launch lineup comprises four trim levels, starting with the base model, followed by Life, Elegance, and R-Line variants.
The entry-level version includes climate control, a rear-view camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, and LED headlights as standard.
The Life trim adds three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, park assist, automatic main beam, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility for the 12.9-inch screen, comfort seats, and distinct alloy wheels.
Elegance represents the more refined trim level, featuring LED Plus headlights, acoustic glass, a power-operated tailgate, Park Assist Pro (a system that records the last 50 meters of your journey and retraces these steps automatically), and 18-inch wheels.
On the other hand, R-Line models stand out with larger 19-inch alloys, a sportier body kit, and sports seats.
When is the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan coming out and what will it cost?
While UK pricing remains undisclosed at this juncture, Volkswagen has outlined that the new Tiguan will have a starting price of 36,600 Euros (approximately £31,300) when it debuts in Germany in February 2024.
Comparatively, the outgoing DSG variant, as a reminder, starts at £33,650 in the UK. Therefore, prospective buyers should anticipate a price increase when sales commence in spring 2024.
Kai Grunitz, Brand Board Member for Technical Development says:
"The latest evolutionary stage of the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB evo) forms the highly innovative technical basis of the third generation of the Tiguan. Thanks to the large economies of scale of the MQB evo, Volkswagen is once again democratizing numerous high-tech developments such as the DCC Pro or the new hybrid drives with an electric range of about 62 miles and making them available to hundreds of thousands of drivers"
