VW Reveals More Detail About The 2024 Transporter & Caravelle

  • Following the ID. Buzz and Multivan, Volkswagen's latest range of vans are now complete with the introduction of the new Transporter lineup, featuring the panel van, Kombi, dropside, and Caravelle models
  • The new generation of Transporter and Caravelle retains the iconic, clean lines of the T6.1, while offering a fresh, modern interpretation of its design DNA
  • For the first time, Volkswagen’s Transporter and Caravelle models will offer a choice between turbodiesel, plug-in hybrid, or electric powertrains
  • The initial images of the seventh-generation van highlight the premium Caravelle Style version and the rugged, beloved PanAmericana variant

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced the latest generation of the Transporter in various configurations, including the standard panel van (focused on cargo transport), the panel van Plus (which adds a second row of seats for combined cargo and passenger transport), the Kombi (designed primarily for passenger transport), and a double cab variant (featuring a platform body with a long wheelbase).

Both the Kombi and panel van models can be equipped with an optional high roof and extended wheelbase. The Caravelle, with seating for nine, is aimed at commercial passenger transport, making it an excellent choice for shuttle services or large-capacity taxis. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will offer the Caravelle in three trims: a basic entry-level version, the mid-range Life specification, and the premium Style version.

Additionally, the Caravelle can also be ordered with an extended wheelbase. A notable variant, the PanAmericana, remains a popular choice due to its rugged off-road styling and unique features. This adventurous model will be available in the new generation based on both the Transporter and Caravelle.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is broadening its range of powertrains with the introduction of the latest Transporter and Caravelle models. Alongside the newest turbodiesel engines (TDI), both vehicles will be available with plug-in hybrid and fully electric drive options. Pre-orders have already started, offering three TDI engine variants: 81kW (110 PS), 110kW (150 PS), and 125kW (170 PS).

Customers can also now order the newly developed plug-in hybrid system (eHybrid), which delivers a total power output of 171kW (232 PS). Soon, three electric drive options with outputs of 100kW (136 PS), 160kW (218 PS), and 210kW (286 PS) will be available, featuring a 64kWh net battery capacity. Additionally, a less powerful electric version with a smaller battery will be offered for urban delivery services. The TDI and eHybrid variants come with front-wheel drive, with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system available as an option on TDI engines starting from 110kW.

The electric models are rear-wheel drive, with an all-wheel drive option planned for future release. The 125kW TDI is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard, which is also optional for the 110kW TDI. For the plug-in hybrid and electric models, an automatic gearbox is mandatory.

2024 VW Transporter 7th Generation Details

Opening the driver’s door reveals the latest innovations in Volkswagen's seventh-generation van. The vehicle no longer relies on a traditional key for ignition; instead, it starts via a button next to the 12-inch digital instrument cluster and the 13-inch infotainment display.

The standard multifunction steering wheel is equipped with well-organised buttons, allowing for easy control of the vehicle’s systems. Volume adjustments for the infotainment system can be made using the steering wheel or a traditional rotary knob. The handbrake lever has been replaced by a parking brake switch, conveniently located in the centre of the dashboard.

A new addition is the space-saving steering column selector lever in automatic models, providing improved access to the cargo or passenger areas. The centre console, which has been repositioned forward depending on the trim level, features large cup holders, while additional cup holders and handy storage compartments on the upper dash help streamline daily tasks. True to the Bulli van tradition, the interior boasts a high, unobstructed dash, elevated seating, and an ergonomic arrangement of all controls.

The new Transporter measures 5,050mm in length, an increase of 146mm compared to the T6.1 model. Its wheelbase has been extended by 97mm, now reaching 3,100mm, with an optional extension available that adds an additional 400mm, bringing the total length to 5,450mm. The Transporter’s exterior width has also increased by 128mm, now measuring 2,032mm (excluding exterior mirrors).

The width between the wheel housings has grown by 148mm to 1,392mm, making it easier to load Euro pallets. The load compartment length on the floor of the standard wheelbase model is now 2,602mm, providing an additional 61mm of space. For those opting for the extended wheelbase, the load compartment length extends to 3,002mm.

These increases in length, width, and wheelbase have allowed Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to significantly boost the load capacity of the new Transporter. The maximum cargo volume for models with the standard wheelbase is now 5.8m³, while the long-wheelbase versions with a high roof can hold up to 9.0m³. Additionally, the Transporter can be fitted with up to six seats in the passenger compartment, along with various partition options.

2024 VW Caravelle Details

The Caravelle is an excellent option for those needing a spacious taxi or shuttle bus. The entry-level model comes equipped with a removable three-seat bench in the third row, providing a total of nine seats. Compared to the Transporter versions, the Caravelle offers more luxurious seating materials, side and curtain airbags in the cab, and an audio system featuring ten speakers.

The mid-range Life trim adds further enhancements, including body-coloured bumpers, exterior mirror housings, and door handles. Additional features include an air conditioning system, armrests for the driver’s seat, a height-adjustable front passenger seat with lumbar support and armrests to match the driver’s, distinctive decorative trims, three extra USB ports in the passenger area, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

2024 VW PanAmericana Model Details

The PanAmericana package first became available for the Transporter in its fourth generation back in 2001. By the fifth generation, the PanAmericana had evolved into a standalone, exclusive variant, quickly becoming a cult favourite. It was only natural, then, that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles would continue this tradition by offering the PanAmericana in the seventh generation, now being unveiled for the first time.

This version will be available for both the panel van models and the Caravelle. Externally, the new PanAmericana stands out with its rugged off-road trims on the side sills and wheel arches, textured bumpers built for durability, and a painted radiator grille. Protective film wraps safeguard the lower part of the boot lid or rear wing doors. Inside, the van features illuminated stainless steel step inserts, high-gloss black accents on the dashboard, and chrome interior door handles. Additional unique touches include exclusive seat fabrics with PanAmericana branding on the backrests, complemented by colour-matched contrast stitching.

The Caravelle PanAmericana comes standard with 19-inch Indianapolis alloy wheels, finished in black with a diamond-cut surface. These wheels are also optionally available for the PanAmericana Transporter. The optional 4MOTION all-wheel drive system enhances the versatility and rugged appeal of both PanAmericana variants.
